Skype coming to PSP! For the Slim only…

At the CES 2008, Sony has announced Skype for PSP, making PSP a truly multifunctional portable game console. You can play games, watch videos, listen to music, surf internet and now, talk! However, Skype is ONLY for PSP-2000 model, which is the new PSP Slim. Argh!

According to various sources, such as Gamespot and QJ.net, Skype will be coming to PSP in late January.

It is a disappointing fact that Sony has advanced to developing new features that are exclusive to the new PSP Slim only. The original PSP, PSP Phat, is unable to support Skype. I guess this is one of the marketing strategy to make PSP Phat owners to buy the new PSP Slim.

QJ.net has also posted the new Skype PSP screenshot and the new Sony USB microphone device for PSP.

As we can see, Skype is coming to PSP (Slim) only. If Skype runs on PSP Phat also, that will be heavenly.

Essentials apps for gamers

Nowadays, most gamers play at home rather than going to cybercafe or LAN shop to play their World of Warcraft, DotA or Battlefield 2, to name a few. Why? Because high speed broadband internet access allows people to communicate across the world in less than a second.

Today, I will introduce software that will help gamers to play better with their friends and family.

Communication

Communication plays an important role in today’s games such as MMORPGs, FPS games and strategy games. FPS games such as Battlefield 2 has already adopt the VOIP communication system during the gameplay.

Skype

Skype, a free VOIP software, available from www.skype.com, is one of the best VOIP software around. If offers almost real-time communication (low latency and low bandwidth usage), and it is free if your friends and you have Skype accounts. You can call landline phone at low rate with SkypeOut.

Try out Skype while playing WoW, Command and Conquer with your friends!

FYI, Skype is currently on version 3.2.0.163.

Connection

Hosting games over the Internet can be troublesome at times. You need to configure the necessary port forwarding on your router (if you are using one), and enable connections from others on your firewall.

With Hamachi, it makes thing easier.

Hamachi is a VPN (Virtual Private Network) service that let you set up your own network over the Internet in few minutes. VPN sounds like some bombastic technology that corporate companies used? Not to worry. Follow on tutorial religiously and you can invite your friends after that and start playing DotA!

Currently Hamachi is on version 1.0.2.2.
