Here is a brief list of players that I gathered from around the web and my game. Hope it’s helpful. They are highly recommended. However, some of them are quite expensive.

Nowadays, most gamers play at home rather than going to cybercafe or LAN shop to play their World of Warcraft, DotA or Battlefield 2, to name a few. Why? Because high speed broadband internet access allows people to communicate across the world in less than a second.

Today, I will introduce software that will help gamers to play better with their friends and family.

Communication

Communication plays an important role in today’s games such as MMORPGs, FPS games and strategy games. FPS games such as Battlefield 2 has already adopt the VOIP communication system during the gameplay.

Skype

Skype, a free VOIP software, available from www.skype.com, is one of the best VOIP software around. If offers almost real-time communication (low latency and low bandwidth usage), and it is free if your friends and you have Skype accounts.You can call landline phone at low rate with SkypeOut.

Try out Skype while playing WoW, Command and Conquer with your friends!

FYI, Skype is currently on version 3.2.0.163.

Connection

Hosting games over the Internet can be troublesome at times. You need to configure the necessary port forwarding on your router (if you are using one), and enable connections from others on your firewall.

With Hamachi, it makes thing easier.

Hamachi is a VPN (Virtual Private Network) service that let you set up your own network over the Internet in few minutes. VPN sounds like some bombastic technology that corporate companies used? Not to worry. Follow on tutorial religiously and you can invite your friends after that and start playing DotA!

Currently Hamachi is on version 1.0.2.2.

World of Warcraft Databases Recommendations

Playing World of Warcraft is a huge time investment. Without guides and help, it will take up additional time that you can use for other things. I’m a WoWer myself, so I understand the difficulties for us to do quests and run through instances and up our profession skills.

Here is some of the World of Warcraft Databases that I recommend for any new and existing players. Maybe those veteran players already knew all these. but just let me share this with everyone.

  1. Thottbot - One of the best World of Warcraft Database on the web, with addons available for players to contribute to the database.
  2. Allakhazam - Comprehensive MMORPG database website, I often use this to check out the Auction House (AH) pricing for items.
  3. Wowhead - Considered as the newest kid on the block, but information available is sufficient and with a clean and simple interface to browse with.

Football Manager 2007 Players (updated!)

This is the updated list of players to look out for when playing Football Manager 2007. I looked through the comments and compiled to this list and I hope this satisfy all of you out there playing this wonderful game.

Goalkeeper

Kasper Schmeichel (Manchester City) - A future hot prospect capable of replacing your No. 1 GK. He is the son of former best GK in the world, Peter Schmeichel, who was Manchester United GK during the glory days.

Igor Akinfeev (CSKA Moscow) - A strong and sturdy GK, bargain buy too.

Scott Carson (Liverpool) - Young and capable.

Defender

Micah Richard (Manchester City) - The best young English central defender, capable of fortifying your defence. You can get him at around 13 to 15 millions pounds.

Anthony Vanden Borre (Anderlecht) - Promising right-back who is capable of replacing your favourite right back in your team, anytime.

Leighton Baines (Wigan) - Hot English left-back, grab him before others do.

Marcelo (Fluminese) - A left-back who is capable of defending and assisting in attacking. Riise-alike.

Dani Alves (Sevilla) - One of the best defender in the game, grab him, if you have the money to spend.

Midfielders

Yohan Mollo (Monaco) - 16 years old. Future prospect. Can be bought at around 1 million pounds.

Cristian Benavente (Real Madrid C) - 16 years old. Great stats, can be improved to world-class level. He comes with a minimum release clause, however he does not want to leave as he said he cannot improve before he leaves.

Sherman Cardenas (Bucaramanga)- 17 years old. Good young midfielder with potential, capable of becoming the next Gerrard. Price tag: 1 million pounds. However he disappears when you update your game to version 7.0.2 and play with the new 7.0.2 database. So if you want him, you should play with the old database.

Freddy Adu (D.C United) - A good attacking midfielder, young and in need of experience to become better.

Yohan Gourcuff (A.C Milan) - Fantastic midfielder! Recommended by many FMers.

Denilson (Arsenal) - Young and capable midfielder, works well in the central midfield.

Attackers (Forwards)

Michael Owen (Newcastle) - 26 years old. You can buy him at the end of the first season as he is not playing regularly due to injury. Still a great scorer. Price tag: less than 10 million pounds, much lesser if Newcastle relegated.

Craig Lindfield (Liverpool) - 17 years old. Young and full of potential to become better. Relatively slow, but can be improved.

Theo Walcott (Arsenal)- 17 years old superb talent, full of power and speed. Sometimes you can buy him from Arsenal at around 15 millions but sometimes 50 millions. Depends on your luck.

David Villa (Valencia) - 25 years old. Come with a minimum release clause of 24 million which is much lower than the expected price. Great purchase.

Javier Saviola (Barcelona) - In Barcelona second team, you can get him for less than 10 million pounds. Capable of scoring regularly.

Nicolas Millan (Colo Colo) - Extremely young and capable scorer of his age. You can sign a youth contract with him only, but as he is young, you may encounter the work permit problem.

Bojan (Barcelona C) - Highly recommended by many FMers too. He is a good attacker at his age.

Anderson (FC Porto) - Also highly recommended by many FMers. You can try pairing him and Bojan.

Install Windows Vista Upgrade from nothing

To all the gamers who wants to save few hundreds bucks on the new Microsoft’s Operating System, Windows Vista, there is a good news here.

Windows Vista Ultimate, which is recommended for hard-core gamers, costs US$ 399 (retail price). I think you can buy half of a computer with this price. However, casual gamers should get the Windows Vista Home Premium, which costs US$239 (retail price). The upgrade version of these editions cost slightly lesser than the retail price.

According to this source, you can install the Upgrade version of Windows Vista, clean from nothing, i.e. you do not need Windows XP. Hurray! Save that money and buy new hardwares and games.

This installation methods save you money but not time. Practically you have to install Windows Vista twice, which may take hours to complete.

Here is the summary of the procedure.

  1. Boot the Windows Vista Upgrade DVD and start the setup.
  2. When you are prompted to enter your product key, DO NOT ENTER, and proceed on with the installation of the 30 days Windows Vista trial.
  3. When prompt, select the edition of Windows Vista that you bought.
  4. When the setup is completed, the new Vista-ised desktop you yearning for will appear and run the install program from within the Windows itself.
  5. Type in your product when prompted.
  6. When you are asked to install an Upgrade version of Custom(Advanced), choose the latter. Yes, you can install Windows Vista for the second time.
  7. Once setup has completed for the second time, you should be able to activate Windows Vista. You can also delete the Windows.old directory which contains information from the first Vista install.

By the way, if you install Windows Vista Upgrade on your Windows XP, your Windows XP Product Key will be invalid after installing Windows Vista.

DotA Allstars 6.37 Gameplay modes and commands

I have done this summary for DotA 6.37 gameplay modes and commands. These are the commands to use for the game creator to choose from different kind of game mode. The bottom part is the commands that can be used by everyone in the game. Enjoy!

Game modes commands:

-allpick(-ap)

You may pick a hero from any tavern

-allrandom(-ar)

You will be given a random hero from any tavern

-leaguemode(-lm)

Both sides will take turn picking heroes

-mirrormatch(-mm)

After one minute, each teams will have the same heroes

-teamrandom(-tr)

You will be given a random hero from your taverns

-deathmatch(-dm)

When you die, you must pick a new hero; You will lose when your team uses up all 39 heroes.

-moderandom(-mr)

Select the mode of the game randomly

-voterandom(-vr)

You will be given a random hero from the voted groupset.

-duplicatemode(-du)

The same heroes may be picked or randomed multiple times.

-shuffleplayers(-sp)

All players will be shuffled across both sides

-samehero(-sh)

All heroes will be given the same hero that the Blue player has.

-allagility(-aa)

Only agility heroes will be allowed

-allintelligence(-ai)

Only intelligence heroes will be allowed

-allstrength(-as)

Only strength heroes will be allowed

-itemdrop(-id)

When you die, a random inventory slot will drop an item.

-easymode(-em)

Towers are weaker. Heroes gain more XP and gold.

-nopowerups(-np)

Powerups are disabled

-supercreeps(-sc)

Siege Golems, Scary Fish and Ancient Hydras can spawn randomly with creep spawns.

-wtf

In this mode, spells have no cooldown or manacost. This is a FOR FUN ONLY mode.

Player gameplay commands:

-ma

Show matchup, find out which opponents use which hero

-ms

Show movement speed of your hero

-cs

Show creep kill statistics

-cson

Activate creep kill statistics information on top right hand corner of the screen

-csoff

Deactivate creep kill statistics information on top right hand corner of the screen

-disablehelp

Disable help for certain abilities

-enablehelp

Enable help for certain abilities

-unstuck

Send your hero back to base, 60 seconds after the command.

-recreate

Available for N’aix, Terrorblade, Dragon Knight and Banehallow. Use when close to the fountain if you have lost control of your hero (metamorphosis problem). 200 seconds channeling

-swaphero

Change hero with another player during the hero selection time period

-showmsg

Show messages

-hidemsg
